Variable Costs
Allow Self-Identification
VEVRAA Is Not Enough
Many employers HR Partners are familiar with OFCCP requirements, but VEVRAA “protected veteran” identification does not include broad swaths of the military community.
How to be More Inclusive
Consider providing candidates and employees with options to self-identify on these dimensions in addition to VERAA requirements:
- Members of the Guard and Reserve
- Anyone who has served in the past
- Spouses of members of the military, whether Guard, Reserve, or Active Duty
- Caretakers of members of the military and veterans
The Business Case for Self-Identification
- Achieve compliance
- Demonstrates - through action – “bring your whole self to work”
- Allows measurement of progress toward goals
- Enables discovery of gaps in hiring, retention, and promotion
- Signals to the workforce that they “count” and matter
Take it the Net Level
Even with the opportunity to self-id, many won’t
Run self-id campaigns periodically
Highlight stories of veterans (with their permission)
Recognize veterans for their service on special holidays
